Chapter Twenty-Five

HIDDEN ENTRANCES TO the catacombs lay in every District. The trick was trying to find them. I knew where a few were and headed for the closest one. Raum must have ordered his lackeys to watch every entrance to his domain. A minor demon was waiting for me at the staircase at the end of another alley.

“Follow me,” the small yellow hell spawn said sourly. She had glowing orange eyes, a slender, misshapen body and lacked wings and a tail. Her feet were goat-like hooves and she had a long, lumpy nose and a thin slit for a mouth. She was completely hairless and looked half-starved judging by her prominent ribs.

Evil far stronger than what I’d sensed at Crowmon’s shrine enveloped me as we descended into the mostly lightless caverns. Wrath’s holy glow shone brightly, signaling to every demon in the area that the Guardian of Nox had entered their lair. Unhappy mutters echoed throughout the tunnels that were made from gray rock. Demons didn’t like me any more than the other uncursed beings did.

I was led through a series of tunnels that varied in width and height as we descended deeper into the bowels of the city. We eventually came to a wide hallway that was guarded by two huge demons who held gigantic war hammers. They were gray, stood twelve feet tall and had thick, scaly skin. Tusks jutted up from their lower jaws. Their lime green eyes glared down at me as we passed between them and approached a set of double doors. They were made of metal and looked far too heavy for me to be able to open them on my own.

The yellow demon knocked on the door. “Enter,” Raum called out, more for my benefit than for his minion’s. Like most of the creatures in Nox, demons had exceptional hearing.

My guide put her shoulder to the door, but she was too weak to budge it. “A little help?” she said snarkily to the gigantic guards. The one on the left rolled his eyes, then reached over to give the door a shove. It swung open and the yellow demon gestured for me to enter. She scurried away even before I took my first step into her leader’s domain.

Raum’s chambers were made of black rock rather than gray. The floor was smooth and it had been polished to a high sheen. The chamber was lit with candles that flickered as though there was a draft that I couldn’t feel. They weren’t magical now and wax dripped to the floor. Thick red rugs lay beneath elegant furniture. A living area sat to the right, with comfortable looking black leather couches and armchairs surrounding a massive coffee table. The coffee table was formed out of black rock. A dining area was to the left, with a table that could seat a dozen people. The chairs were plain and wooden rather than ornate. Another door stood ahead that probably led to a bedroom. Beyond the dining area was a library, with bookcases that were lined up in neat rows.
